Bir eş anlamlı, başka bir kelime veya cümle ile aynı veya neredeyse aynı anlama sahip olan bir kelimedir. Eş anlamları olan kelimelere eş anlamlı kelimeler denir. Bunlar Türkçe’de eş anlamlı kelimeler olarak adlandırılırken İngilizce’de Synonyms denir.

Eş anlamlı sözcükleri kullanmak, bir metni okumayı daha keyifli hale getirmek için kullanılan zarif ve sık kullanılan bir yöntemdir. Aynı kelime birkaç cümlede çok sık kullanılıyorsa, bu kelimenin her bir cümlede farklı bir eş anlamlısı bulunup kullanılması iyi olur. Paragrafta aynı kelimeler tekrarlanmış olarak kullanılmamış olur.

Eş anlamlılar genellikle biraz farklı anlamlara sahip farklı değişkenler olduğundan, kullanımları özel özellikleri vurgulayacak ve böylece metin daha kesin olacaktır. Ayrıca, Eş anlamlılar konuşmanın herhangi bir parçası olabilir (isimler, fiiller, sıfatlar, zarflar veya edatlar gibi).
